outh Sulawesi Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo officiated the opening of Phinisi Festival 2017 on Nov. 2 at Leepe’s Bulukumba port, Bulukumba regency.

“This event has been included in South Sulawesi’s calendar of events and implemented by Bulukumba regency. We hope it will become a national event that helps promote Indonesia to the world,” told Syahrul.

The festival ran until Nov. 4 and this year marks its eighth anniversary.

At the opening event, the event featured a percussion performance by the governor and a handover ceremony of a miniature phinisi boat.

Syahrul said that phinisi boat is a global icon of Bulukumba. He moreover wished for the event to be held annually in the future and feature more activities.

“We need to be more determined in developing Bira and Kajang tourist areas,” he told.

Both the governor and Bulukumba Regent A.M. Sukri also officiated the Phinisi Sailing Competition that was joined by 20 phinisi boats.

Moreover a fishing competition themed Eating Fish Movement was held at the same time as the sailing competition, of which the catch of the day were then cooked together.

Other activities at the festival include Anynorong Lopi ritual (phinisi launching event), Kajang traditional rituals called Addingingi Kampong and Attunu Panroli.

The latter is a crowbar burning ritual that serves as a method to find out whether someone’s lying. An honest person is said to feel no heat nor be burnt when they hold the burning crowbar.‎ (kes)
