Oujia: Origin of Evil, the prequel to 2014's Ouija, continues to scare audiences through the terror of the Ouija board.

Set in 1967 in Los Angeles, the events in this prequel happened in the same house where the terror occurred in the first installment. A widowed mother Alice Zander (Elizabeth Reaser) operates a séance “scam” business with the help of her daughters Paulina ‘Lina’ Zander (Annalise Basso) and Doris Zander (Lulu Wilson). In order to spice the business up, Alice decides to purchase a Ouija board. Little does she know that when she uses the board for the first time, she involuntarily calls a spirit into her house and the spirit channels its voice through Doris. After that, Doris is able to help her mother’s business and they believe the spirit is actually their deceased father. However, one night changes everything and Doris is never the same again.

The spirit that possesses Doris torments the family and the people who come inside the house. At first, Alice is reluctant to believe that her daughter has changed although Lina thinks otherwise.

In addition to scaring cinema-goers, Ouija: Origin of Evil also offers a touch of drama. The movie shows how the Zander family struggles to pay the bills and survive after the death of the husband and father.

Directed by Mike Flanagan, the movie is enjoyable and can be watched without having to have had to see the first film. Both films are connected through the role of Lina who also appears in the first installment. (kes)
