Sharia controversy

I totally disagree, because we already have laws

I totally disagree, because we already have laws. So, we don't need bylaws whatsoever. What we need is the government's total commitment to law enforcement.

EFBY

Bandung

The sharia bylaws are against freedom of religion, speech, thinking and dress code, which are the essential right of every human being. So, why is the government afraid to revoke them. Indonesia is a democratic country and sharia bylaws are not part of the Pancasila state ideology and hopefully never will be.

N. TICOALU

Jakarta

Very much disagree.

ALEXANDER

Denpasar

The Indonesian Constitution guarantees freedom of religion? How can the government allow local legislators to pass bylaws that contradict this? Do SBY/Kalla represent the Indonesian people or just the Muslim majority?

Democracy is not that the majority can boss around the minorities. The quality of a democracy is determined by the extent the majority is prepared to look after/respect minorities too. Indonesia is supposed to be the proof that democracy and Islam can exist together, but the refusal to do anything about the illegal sharia bylaws proves the opposite. What a mess!

LUCAS VAN DER GEEST

Jakarta

My heart is bleeding for my country. Because of the stupid current government, my Indonesia is going to lose Bali, Timor, Papua, Ambon and North Sulawesi. Later, there will be no more Indonesia from Sabang to Merauke.

TATI

Jakarta

As a unitary republic, this country needs only one set of regulations which apply to everybody. Not a different set for different people with different backgrounds. And we will call it fair and consistent.

BOWO

Yogyakarta

Sharia is unfair especially for women. They're suffering a great deal from it. Please, don't be a wolf in sheep's clothing.

HO TJAU HOA

Jakarta

I believe this is against the Constitution. Amazing how the politicians are under the influence of the religious power holders.

NURI

Kuta, Bali

I disagree with the government's position not to revoke the bylaws. It is the beginning of a flame that could break up Indonesia.

JANKANDI SARAGIH

Cilegon, Banten

Politics and religion never mix well. I have been told Islam is a tolerant religion, but sharia-inspired laws show little tolerance for other people's rights.

DON

Denpasar

I absolutely disagree with the sharia bylaws. The government should build the economy based on its national ideology for the whole people, not for the sake of certain groups, not even for a certain group of religion followers. It's totally unfair. People are suffering enough and do not need to make others suffer more because of hard-line ideologies based on religion.

RIZAL

Jakarta

Sharia doesn't need to be revoked because sharia is illegal and against the Constitution and so are the sharia police. The government should be clamping down on them.

VIN LOM

Makassar, South Sulawesi

It clearly shows how weak SBY's political will is as he continues to fail miserably in protecting non-Muslim Indonesians and residents, including his failure to protect the Constitution.

MARK

Jakarta

Sharia law in Indonesia is used to harass women only. A few months ago a couple of sharia police in Aceh were caught in a "compromising" situation. Apparently, they apologized and then were accepted back as guardians of people's morals. If sharia is seriously implemented maybe we will see a number of "repentant" amputees in senior government positions? Am I living in a Republik Mimpi?
