The National Police announced on Friday it had shuffled 40 of its officers in a move described as a "regeneration" process.

The 40 officers included eight provincial police chiefs and three directors of investigation at the crime squad, National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Abubakar Nataprawira said.

Among the officers who will take up new positions at the provincial level are National Police deputy spokesman Brig. Gen. Anton Bachrul Alam, who will serve as South Kalimantan Police chief, and National Police director of the special crimes unit Brig. Gen. Hadiatmoko, who will become the new Riau Police chief.

Anton will replace Brig. Gen. Alba Lubis, who will be the new secretary of Interpol's National Central Bureau. Hadiatmoko will replace Brig. Gen. Sutjiptadi, who will serve as the Police Academy governor in Semarang.

East Nusa Tenggara Police chief Brig. Gen. Sadarum and Papua Police chief Insp. Gen. Max Donald Aer, both of whom will retire later this year, will be replaced by Brig. Gen. Bambang Suaedi and Brig. Gen. Bagus Eko Danto, respectively.

The Bali Police chief position will be filled by the current Police Academy governor, Insp. Gen. Asikin. Asikin replaces Insp. Gen. Paulus Purwoko, who will become the new deputy chief of the National Police crime squad.

The top positions at the Bangka Belitung Police and Bengkulu Police will be taken by Brig. Gen. Iskandar Hassan and Brig. Gen. Sugiyono, respectively.

Sr. Comm. Suparni Tarto, director of intelligence and security at the Jakarta Police, will become Central Sulawesi Police chief.

This is the fourth reshuffle by the National Police this year. The previous three were on Jan. 24, Feb. 20 and March 16.

Abubakar dismissed speculation there were any particular reasons behind the reshuffle, which was based on a decree signed on May 1.

"This is only a regular restructure because almost every month officers retire. There's nothing wrong with this," he said.

He said the inauguration of the new officers would be conducted in the near future.
