People young and old are becoming acquainted with a range of urban-styled activities, including sports, music, dance and artwork, at the 2008 UrbanFest at Carnival Beach, Ancol Dreamland, in North Jakarta.

The festival, which runs until Sunday, features street dances, recycled art, murals, graffiti and painted sneakers exhibitions, a stomp percussion band, a lowrider bike competition, as well as rows of stalls selling urban-style knick knacks.

"I am curious about what is hip among teens nowadays," said Dani, a mother of two teenagers from Tangerang, who also took along her 70-year-old mother to the event Saturday.

"The festival features various innovative and expressive activities. My two teen children favor the painting exhibition, because both of them like to paint," she said.

Another visitor, Reinhard, said he really enjoyed visiting UrbanFest.

"There are many interesting activities here to be photographed," he said.

UrbanFest runs from Saturday until Sunday, and is open from noon until nighttime.

However, Dani said the event had not been well publicized.

"The organizer should have handed out leaflets to visitors because this area is big."

Dani and her family spent two-hours touring the 50-hectare Carnival Beach area, which is located at the east end of Ancol Dreamland complex.

"The venue for this festival is too far away. It would have attracted more visitors if it were held in the heart of Jakarta, like in Senayan (Central Jakarta)."

Carnival Beach is located five kilometers from the Ancol busway stop, and three kilometers from Ancol Dreamland's east entrance.

The only option other than walking for those visiting the festival without a car is to hire a motorcycle taxi within the complex for Rp 10,000.

Agnes Laurensia, 26, who lives in West Jakarta, also said the event was not easily accessible.

"It would be better if the festival were held at a free public location in Jakarta's hub, like along Jl. Sudirman during Car-Free-Day or at National Monument Park," she said.

While the event is free of charge, visitors must pay Rp 12,000 (US$1.30) per person to enter Ancol Dreamland, and an extra vehicle charge of Rp 12,000 for a car and Rp 10,000 for a motorcycle.
