ANDUNG, W. Java: The Subang prosecutor's office is seeking a way to arrest Subang regent-elect Eep Hidayat after he was named a suspect in two cases of corruption totaling Rp 4 billion (US$321,900).
Eep was named a suspect Monday for his alleged involvement in the embezzlement of the 2005-2008 Subang regional budget.
Subang chief prosecutor Yusron said Thursday that his office would detain Eep if he was considered at risk of destroying evidence or escaping.
"We will find a way to detain him if the situation urges us to do so," said Yusron over the phone.
"Thousands of Eep's supporters staged a rally protesting Eep being questioned at our office."
On Monday, the Purwakarta Police, which oversees Subang regency, named Eep as a suspect in the embezzlement of Rp 2 billion in husbandry funds from the Social Services Ministry.
Three hours later, Subang prosecutors named him a suspect in another case for allegedly embezzling tax commission worth Rp 2 billion.
Yusron said his office had investigated more than 10 witnesses, including head of Subang revenue agency Ugay Lugaya and former agency head Agus Mukharom.
Supported by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Eep and running mate Ojang Sohandi won the Oct. 26, defeating Golkar Party candidates Imas Aryumningsih and TV star Primus Yustisio. -- JP
