SIDOARJO: A team from the Sidoarjo Mudflow Handling Agency (BPLS) verified 16 more asset bundles in the past two weeks, bringing the total number of bundles to be paid to mudflow victims living outside the mudflow pond to 1,467.
On Thursday, Soetopo, head of the BPLS' social rehabilitation section, said the 16 packets were worth Rp 368.8 million and would be immediately handed over to the recipients.
Previously, the BPLS, representing the government, paid Rp 5.7 billion for 101 packets that it verified on Nov. 27, he added.
The government has pledged to compensate hundreds of mudflow victims who lived in the villages of Kedungcangkring, Besuki Barat and Pejarakan in Porong district, devastated by the mudflow in February and included in the 2008 state budget.
The BPLS also hands out monthly financial aid of Rp 300,000 per person to 6,094 mudflow victims.
The payment is only 20 percent of the compensation promised, with the remaining 80 percent to be paid within a year. -- JP
