JAKARTA: Seven shops at Senen market in Central Jakarta were destroyed by fire early Monday morning.
The shops which sold bags, wallets, plastics and books, were located in the market's basement.
Karno, 35, who owns Mahkota Jaya shop, said he heard of the fire at 1 a.m..
"I tried to salvage my merchandise, but the fire was too big," he said as quoted by beritajakarta.com. He added that he suffered Rp 10 million in losses.
Ivo Edwin Aryanto, site manager of Senen market, said that 24 fire engines had been deployed to put out the fire.
"No fatalities or injuries were reported," Ivo said. The fire fighters managed to douse the fire within one hour.
Ivo said that city market operator Pasar Jaya had provided a power generator to supply electricity to the traders on Monday.
Police are investigating the cause of the fire. - JP.
