AKARTA: A survey released Thursday has concluded that Indonesian sinetron (soap operas) are publicly regarded as being both poor in morals and aesthetic quality.
Sinetron had failed to boost social empathy or provide role models, and contains too much violence and veiled pornography, coordinator of the Science, Aesthetics and Technology (SET) Foundation Agus Sudibyo said Thursday.
The survey, conducted in March and October last year and January this year, involved 220 respondents in 11 major cities across the country.
The research was undertaken by SET, the Tifa Foundation and the Indonesian TV Journalist's Association.
Respondents considered sinetron themes unreflective of reality, inappropriate for children, environmentally unfriendly, gender biased and irrelevant to public interests, Agus said.
