MBON, Maluku: Dozens of homes in the Kei Islands, Southeast Maluku regency, were submerged in seawater after cyclone-fed waves up to 3 meters high crashed into the beach Tuesday in Ohoirenan subdistrict, Kei Besar district.
Subdistrict head Yustus Ubra told The Jakarta Post by phone that three of the homes were heavily damaged. A community health center was also flooded.
The strong waves, according to Yustus, also caused heavy damage to the road connecting Ohoirenan and Ohoiwait subdistricts. 200-meter road, 12 meters wide, was badly eroded by the seawater. Only a 5-meter stretch of it remained intact.
Strong waves also destroyed the 300-meter levee built, ironically, to hold back waves.
"That explains why the seawater got into the residential complex," Yustus said.
Hundreds of residents have fled their homes for higher grounds.
