ADANG: A ship, which used to transport Australian surfers, was destroyed by a fire in Padang waters, West Sumatra, on Sunday. No fatalities were reported.

Head of Padang Fire Brigade Budhi Erwanto said the fiber-made ship owned by PT Mentawai Wisata only carried two crew when it was trapped in the fire near Pisang Island.

He said the crew, identified as Dedi and Edi, managed to jump off the boat before it broke into two parts.

He said firefighters could not reach the ship to extinguish the fire as the accident happened at sea.

The ship was scheduled to transport nine Australian surfers to Mentawai Island on Tuesday.

"We have been informed the fire was caused by a short-circuit," Budhi said, adding the fire was estimated to have caused Rp 1 billion (US$95,000) in revenue losses.
