Volleyball joins ministry's high performance program

JAKARTA: Volleyball, which contributed two gold medals at Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 2007, has been added to the list of the Top-Tier Athletes Program (TAP).

A number of 18 male and 18 female athletes of the indoor volleyball as well as six male and six female athletes of beach volleyball will add up to the pool of 241 athletes from 16 sports currently undergoing the TAP training program held by the State Ministry for Sports and Youth Affairs.

"We aim at equaling our 2007 achievements at the upcoming SEA Games in Laos," Heyzer Harsono, an official of Indonesian Volleyball Association (PBVSI), said on Thursday.

The two golds in 2007 came each from the men's indoor and beach volleyball teams.

The women's indoor team is currently participating in the Asian Women's Clubs Volleyball Championship in Amphur Muang, Thailand, while the men's indoor team will take part in the World Cup qualifications in Thailand between June 9 and 11.
