AKARTA: The Central Jakarta administration plans to turn all state schools within the municipality "green", by promoting gardening and farming among students, Central Jakarta Mayor Sylviana Murni said Wednesday.

"I'm obsessed with the idea that residents of Central Jakarta will someday be able to grow their own vegetables," she said at the launch of the program at SMK 14 state vocational high school in Johar Baru, as quoted by beritajakarta.com.

"People will no longer have to go to the market to buy vegetables, but can get them from the schools."

She added the gardening and farming program would not require much land, saying a small pot or a backyard would be sufficient.

She urged all district chiefs to promote gardening among the residents of their areas.
