AKARTA: A moderate 5.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Melonguane in North Sulawesi on Wednesday afternoon, the second quake in one day and the third since Saturday.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BKMG) reported that the quake hit at 12:08 p.m. Jakarta time. The epicenter of the quake was 41 kilometers southwest of Melonguane and 20 kilometers below sea level.

Earlier Wednesday morning, an earthquake of magnitude 5.8 hit the city.

The epicenter of that quake was 87 kilometers northeast of Melonguane and 10 kilometers below sea level.

Earlier this year, a 7.2-magnitude quake struck the city on the northern coast of Sulawesi Island, briefly triggering a tsunami warning, and causing residents to flee to higher ground.
