IDOARJO: A woman was killed after being hit by a Penataran train at the Gedangan railway crossing in Sidoarjo, East Java, on Sunday morning.

The train, plying the Blitar-Surabaya route in East Java, had then stopped and reversed.

Witness Wahyu Prasetiyo told Antara news agency that the woman, in her 30s, was behind a passing car while crossing the railway line.

"At the time, the Penataran train coming from the south *Blitar to Surabaya* direction stopped, stepped back and someone onboard retrieved the body of the victim."

The accident caused a traffic jam as long as 1 kilometer away from the railway crossing.

Gedangan police chief Adj. Comr. Edi P. said the identity of the woman was not yet known and that his office was investigating the accident. - JP
