AKARTA: Witnesses for the plaintiff said they brought a squatting case against two widows to trial to establish legal certainty on state assets belonging to state pawnbroker Perum Pegadaian.

At Tuesday's hearing at the East Jakarta District Court, Guladi Aksiono, the firm's manager for legal affairs, said his office had tried to ask the defendants, Soetarti Soekarno and Rusmini, to leave their houses twice since 2008, but to no avail.

The two defendants have been charged to have violated the 1992 Housing and Settlement Law for allegedly squatting in state-owned houses on Jl. Cipinang Jaya, Jatinegara, East Jakarta, without the consent of the company, who are the owners of the property.
