JAKARTA: The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) is calling
for the establishment of a truth and reconciliation commission to
resolve the lingering problems over past gross violation of human
rights in Aceh.
Karimun Usman, the chairman of the Aceh branch of the PDI-P, said
Thursday that the call for a commission was endorsed by the recent
party congress in Bali.
“The PDI-P is also seeking the establishment of a similar commission in
Papua,” he was quoted as saying by Antara news agency.
So far, the central government has been reluctant to bow to pressure
from various parties to investigate past human rights abuses that
occurred during military operations between 1989 and 1998 as well as
the subsequent operations against Free Aceh Movement rebels that ended
with the 2005 Helsinki peace accord.
