Those quick to pass judgment may think that Maria Farida Indrati, the only woman in the Constitutional Court, was also the only judge out of the nine-member panel to doubt the necessity of the pornography law because of her gender.
But on closer inspection, it turns out her objection to the court’s recent decision to uphold the pornography law did not specifically defend women but Indonesia’s pluralistic social reality in general. Coincidentally, she happens to be a woman.
Sitting behind a spacious desk at her office on the 13th floor of the Constitutional Court building, this 61-year-old small-framed judge spoke to The Jakarta Post about her views on the pornography law and her role as the only female judge in the highest legal institution in the country.
Last month, the Constitutional Court headed by Mahfud MD turned down a judicial review filed against the pornography law on the basis that the law provided exceptions for the arts, literature, traditional customs, sports and culture.  (By Prodita Sabarini, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta).

It is very reassuring to know that a voice of reason like Ibu Farida’s can still be heard, occasionally, over the din of the gentlemen (bapak-bapak). She is a role model to many.

I often read this paper. This is the first time I have found an article which truly captivated me.
What I mean is that you have written about a woman who has an extremely interesting life and is currently a constitutional judge: The only one. My brief experience in
Indonesia in the 1980s was that there were many Indonesian women who are brilliant, have intellectual talent and influential in various academic fields.
This article should be continued with such personalities as judge Farida. She is indeed an exceptional woman, but then, Indonesia is full of them, if you only look. Hopefully, we will see more articles about such successful women over the bapak-bapak shouting!

She is a true Indonesian. What Bhineka Tunggal Ika should be. She is a person who cares about the continuation of a pluralistic Indonesia. I wish there are more leaders in Indonesia’s judicial system like her.

It is really good, informative article about a truly inspiring woman in a pivotal position of Indonesian society.
