our comments on the plan of the Indonesian Soccer Association (PSSI) to recruit footballers from the Netherlands, especially under 21-year-olds of Indonesian descent.

I support the good effort from PSSI to improve Indonesian football. I hope Indonesia will soon be one of the participants at the World Cup.

Will it help boost the performance of the Indonesian team? No, I don’t think so.
The problem is not in the quality of the footballers. It’s the management of the PSSI itself.
Why plan to spend money (which I suppose is no small amount) to repatriate them? What’s wrong with young footballers in Indonesia?
Has the PSSI done a proper recruitment and training program?

It seems PSSI never learns what should be done to boost our team’s performance.
Repatriating players with one Indonesian parent from Holland won’t do anything.
Are you sure that those players want to play for Indonesia, which is a country with no system and full of corrupt officials?
And we want to invite Fatih Terim, the internationally-renowned former Turkish national team coach to be our coach.
Even the world-class coaches such as Guus Hiddink and Sir Alex Mourinho can’t help improve our soccer performance as long as corrupt officials remain in the PSSI.
Reform the organization, then hire new people who have clear vision and strong commitment to lead our national team.

What is the benefit of making a European player become Indonesian?
I don’t think there is one, particularly for those footballers. Look at what has happened to our badminton players, swimmers and boxers — all of whom had glory in the past but have nothing now.
There is no social benefit, either. Why not allow dual citizenship so those players can return and contribute to the country. Other countries allow it.
This way, footballers can stay in the country and choose where to retire later.
