AKARTA: Approaching Independence Day on Aug. 17, which this year takes place during Ramadan, flag vendors complain that their income has fallen substantially compared to the past several years.
A flag vendor, Sunaryo Aso, who runs his business in Kalimalang, Bekasi, east of Jakarta, said that his income this year was the lowest in six-year of selling.
“My income is declining drastically,” he said, as quoted by kompas.com.
Sunaryo believed that this year’s Independence Day celebration would not be as vibrant as in previous years because it came during the fasting month.
He added that since he started selling his flags on Aug. 1, he averaged only two sales a day. “Last year I could sell eight to 10 flags a day with a total net income of Rp 6 million [US$672],” he said. - JP
