AKARTA: National Police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri ordered on Monday that checks for firearms be intensified due to a recent spate of armed robberies.

“Police at the regional command levels nationwide have been ordered to focus on ‘sweeping up’ firearms,” National Police chief detective Comr. Gen. Ito Sumardi said.

“The order is in effect as of [Monday]. The ‘sweeping’ has been conducted for some time and we mean to intensify it.”

High on the list of priority is better control of arsenals, he added.

A flurry of armed robberies have targeted a number of locations in Java and Sumatra.

Last week, a group of 16 robbers, some brandishing M-16 and AK-47 assault rifles, made off with Rp 300 million in cash from a bank after shooting dead a police officer on duty.

On Aug. 6, 14 armed men stole more than 6 kilos of jewelry from shops in Tebet, South Jakarta. — JP
