Comment: Anggun C. Sasmi: Still Indonesian at heart

S

em>Sept. 27, p28: Singer Anggun’s social network status updates usually focus on her toddler daughter Kirana’s doings or recently reconnecting with the beauty of Bali. It was a very different sentiment Saturday, when she vented about feeling slighted by her homeland. Anggun was stung by a report on a local news portal about the recent United Nations Equator Prize ceremony, held in New York City on Sept. 20. The brief focused on the presence of UN Goodwill Ambassador for the Environment Edward Norton and UN Environmental Ambassador Gisele Bundchen, but there was no mention of Anggun, who is the Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and also gave a speech on the night. She also says she was cropped from a photo with the American actor and the Brazilian model. “It’s not because I wanted the headline to talk only about me, but the fact is they didn’t even mention my participation, nor my name and they even cut my photo. Big ouch!”, she said Sunday

Your comments:

Sad to hear that Indonesian media trash Anggun, while here in France everyone adores her and praises her for her talent, intelligence, humanitarian actions and inner beauty. She is a big star in France and she gets the support she deserves in our country and in European countries like Italy as well.

Among countries, Indonesia has astonishingly talented people, with their intelligence demonstrated by the many accomplishments attained by its national students in Olympiads and Anggun is one of that core aesthetic, an Indonesia with French. I suppose one does not need to judge a person for lack of nationalism just because one is now a citizen of another country.
Unfortunately, the government of Indonesia has no way to manage the natural and human resources across the country; this is substantiated by its inability to protect their oil and gas reservoirs, which has been overexploited by foreign private companies. Big ouch!

Ever since Anggun left Indonesia in 1994, the local media has committed many sins against her, reporting that she had AIDS (marrying a local man is not a guarantee you will be AIDS-free). I was sad when I read the news, yet four years later, she came back to Indonesia with her English album. She forgave the media, she took no revenge. I have no doubts about her love for Indonesia (also for France). She’s one in a million.
To others who have given her bad reviews, you should Google her, set up an interview and talk to her face to face. That’s better than “creating your own story”. Now, you can call yourself a man.
