ATAM, Riau Islands: Riau Islands Police and National Police officers have returned 76 luxury cars previously confiscated for false paperwork, to their owners in a move that critics are calling signs of weakened law enforcement.
The National Police confiscated the cars on Sept. 23. They seized 104 cars of various makes, including Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Jaguar and Lexus. The police said the cars were no longer allowed to use X-series license plates, which indicate that the cars were exempt from value-added or luxury tax and were imported in used condition.
Riau Islands Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Hartono told The Jakarta Post on Friday that police had returned the cars to their owners.
On Oct. 11 police returned another 17 cars to their owners, leaving the remaining 11 cars in impound.
“I cannot announce whether the confiscated cars will be returned to their owners, as this depends on the investigation,” Hartono said.
He said the National Police were questioning a suspect for smuggling the cars to Batam on Oct. 29. — JP
