OGOR: Inter-faith activists have called on the central government to reject the Bogor city administration’s decision to close a church in the city.

Activist Mohamad Guntur Romli said the administration’s order to close Taman Yasmin Church, which has forced the congregation to conduct their service on the side of the road, could spark unrest.

“As lawful citizens of this country, every member of the congregation should have their right to worship guaranteed by the government,” Guntur told the Post on Sunday.

Members of the Taman Yasmin congregation held their Sunday mass on the roadside after the Bogor city administration closed their church, citing growing concern that the building was being used to spread Christianity in the Muslim-majority Bogor.

Another inter-faith activist, Bondan Gunawan, a former minister in the cabinet of former president Abdurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid, said the central government must be brave enough to allow the congregation to return to their church. — JP
