A time to explore

JP/Indah Setiawati

Actress Alexandra Gottardo, 25, gained popularity after playing Mama Tatiana, a leading role in the film Tanah Air Beta (My Motherland).

Aside from tanning her light skin, her biggest challenge in the role was having to speak Tetun.

I like adventure, such as exploring remote places around the country. By undertaking such activities, I hope to learn more about the richness of our country. I also want to explore the diversity of cultures and tribes that I learned about in high school.

I am from Malang, East Java. I used to be a country girl. Frankly speaking, if I had to stay in Jakarta for one month, I would likely find it stressful. I think I would have to leave the city for a while just to recharge. I don’t know where I’d go – it wouldn’t have to be abroad; anywhere would do.

On Sunday, I mostly stay at home and relax because I have been working from Monday to Saturday. I usually call a home-service massage, watch television and play with my two beloved dogs.

However, I am a spontaneous person, so my activities during my free time depend on what I want at a particular moment. I will go to the gym, watch a movie at the cinema, swim or hang out with friends or my boyfriend.

I sometimes sunbathed to tan my skin for the movie Tanah Air Beta, but I was OK about being darker skinned and did not hurriedly scrub my skin because I knew the color would fade and my usual skin color would return.

Concerning the film, I think it teaches us about the poor conditions in remote areas of our country. Many people still cannot afford basic needs such as rice and drinking water. They are strong people and they try hard to stand on their own feet, but they dearly need our help.

I usually try to help people living under such circumstances by teaching or buying things they need. I’ve looked at sponsorships, but sometimes the donors have too many requirements. They want me to invite the media to get publicity. I avoid such things.
