Govt urged to hold tsunami evacuation training

PADANG: The government should teach the public how to conduct a swift and effective evacuation in the event of an earthquake or tsunami, an official says.

Tsunami Alert Community director Patra Rina Dewi said there were not enough tsunami early warning systems to alert everyone quickly enough.“The government had better focus on educating people not to panic and to evacuate themselves to safety,” she said on Monday.

A tsunami triggered by a large earthquake killed hundreds of people in the Mentawai Islands in October. — JP
