The Jakarta government has reiterated its ambition to build six underground stations as part of the Mass Rapid Transit system by 2016.
Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said on Monday his administration had begun to acquire land along the planned MRT route from Lebak Bulus to the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle, a distance of 15.5 kilometers, Tribunnews.com reported.
Of that distance, the MRT will run above ground for 10.5 kilometers.
The six underground stations will be at the Al Azhar Mosque, Istora Senayan (Ratu Plaza), Bendungan Hilir, Setiabudi, Dukuh Atas and the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle.

Another beautiful project, but what about the fact that the land in Central Jakarta is the result of
centuries of river-flow and is now just compact mud. Note how Jl. Thamrin sank nearly 5 feet in
the last 30 years.
Digging a tunnel in such soft ground is asking for disaster. Underground tunnels should be dug at higher elevations such as Fatmawati, Lebak Bulus Ciputat, Parung, etc. Everywhere else, the train should be over-ground.

How much of the budget will actually be spent on the work? By the time all the dishonest people have gotten their claws into the cash, we will be left with bare columns in the street and no money to finish the job. We have seen too many idle columns along city roads already.

I hope they install good pumps and have somewhere to pump the water during heavy rains. I was near Al Azhar a few weeks ago and it was knee deep in flood water.
All these underground stations will certainly help with the surface flooding and provide excellent accommodation for the homeless.

Don’t just plan it, do it. There are a lot of wonderful plans for Jakarta but they have not been executed, for one reason or another, so I’m praying that this will really happen.
