Comment: Graft eradication in 2011 curriculum

Following a discussion with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), the Education Ministry has announced plans to include an anticorruption module in the 2011 curriculum.

“Corruption can be reduced by arresting people, but these efforts should also involve the education system,” National Education Minister Muhammmad Nuh said Thursday as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

Nuh said corruption was not just an adult problem. “It is also a problem for children because they will grow and become adults and parents.” Children must be provided with honest education, he said. “The anticorruption education program can be shared by children with their parents,” Nuh said.

Teach them about the corrupt system early — good plan. By the time they are involved in society, the brighter ones will have worked out how to maximize their gain. I think top-down is the way forward here.
This is probably nothing more than a paper exercise designed as a show for the watching world that we are serious about tackling corruption.

If the government wants to eradicate corruption then why the hell doesn’t it start by allowing the death penalty for big corruption convictions?

If the government wants to include the educational system in its anti-corruption drive, why not start with ending the practice of selling teachers’ positions? Civil service jobs should be filled by testing not by bribery.

The minister’s approach is worth a try. After reading another article regarding the corruption watchdog’s allegations against numerous Jakartan schools, this is a good approach for the students and their parents.

Hopefully there will be no more corruption, collusion or nepotism in the schools or anywhere else in Indonesia in the future. Well done, I would like to see a copy of the module published.
