President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday said he had helped to resolving the case of tax corruption defendant Gayus Tambunan, amid a lengthy police investigation, marred by Gayus’ repeated outings from his cell.
“The public has asked the President to be involved in resolving corruption cases, for example Gayus’ case. While I know this case belongs
to the legal domain, I must respect these wishes. In order to eradicate corruption in this country, I oversee this case to make sure all officers have done their jobs well and effectively,” President Yudhoyono said at a meeting in his office in Jakarta
on Monday.
President Yudhoyono said he understood when he needed to respect the law and when he should interfere.
“When there is a dispute between the Corruption Eradication Commission [KPK] and the police, I step in to find a solution. In the future I will play this role in order to improve law enforcement, particularly to fight corruption,” he said.
On Monday, SBY held a Cabinet meeting that was attended by several ministers, including Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Djoko Suyanto, Coordinating Economic Minister Hatta Rajasa, and Law and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar.
The meeting discussed the current situation of law enforcement institutions in Indonesia, including the case of graft defendant Gayus Tambunan and the Bank Century bailout.

Please, Mister President, stay away. If the police cannot solve the case, then sack them or replace them.

We all know what it means when SBY intervenes. Things are getting a bit warm. How do they all sleep
at night?

Let’s just stick to our jobs and not undermine what democratic institutions are built on, the separation between the judicial, executive, and legislative branches.
It’s exactly when democracies fail to abide to this form of governance that allows corruption to perversely suffuse and justify its existence in every level of government.
It will not surprise me if it will take another decade or so to eradicate corruption from Indonesia’s political system.

Mr. President, Indonesia needs you to be decisive and proactive in the fight against corruption.
The scourge of corruption infects all countries like a cancer and is reflective of the degeneration of human values.
Unfortunately Indonesia too has its fair share of this and it is people who control power, like you, who can make an impact and help stem the rot.

Corruption, collusion, feudalism and fanatics are deeply inlaid in this society. Fanaticism and corruption are even growing worse. You cannot change that in a few decades, or even in a few generations.
I can see the younger generation is not that different from the New Order generation.
They both have the same way of thinking.
