AKARTA: The Jakarta Fire Department announced Thursday that the number of fires in the city decreased to 698 in 2010, compared to 843 in 2009.
Fire chief Paimin Napitupulu said 21 people were killed and 69 injured in fires across the city last year.
“Two of our officers were also injured while on duty,” he added.
The department said it would add another 450 new firefighters to its existing force of 2,911. — JP
