ANGERANG: Serpong Police shot dead an alleged thief and arrested another in Pondok Jagung subdistrict, North Serpong, South Tangerang, early Thursday.
Serpong Police chief Comr. Hibertus Omposungu said patrolling officers investigated a suspicious van parked on Jl. Bhayangkara at about 2 a.m.
The officers approached the car and asked the driver to show his license and vehicle registration, and the contents of the van.
“Another man identified as Wawan Kurniawan, 44, a resident of Pasir Haur, Pandeglang regency, tried to stall the officers,” he said.
A text message on a phone belonging to Wawan led the police to a building housing swallow nests in Pondok Jagung. The police attempted to arrest the people at the address, but four suspects escaped.
Omposungu said that at that moment Wawan also attempted to escape, and was shot in the chest by the police officers. He died at the scene.
The police arrested the van driver, and a resident of Bojen Kampong, Lebak regency. They also seized the van, seven keys, a drill and two cellular phones as evidence. – JP
