AKARTA: Taiwanese PC maker PT Acer Indonesia is aiming to maintain its control over the Indonesian market with the launch of its newest product, the Acer Aspire S3 ultrabook.

Acer Indonesia’s president director Jason Lim said on Wednesday that the company, which holds 26 percent of the local market for desktop computers and a 34 percent share of the local portable computer market, expected the new product would be in stores next month.

“For this first edition, we will order between 30,000 and 45,000 units of the ultrabook,” he said during the product’s release in Jakarta.

Jason was optimistic that the product would be accepted by Indonesian consumers. “The product is made to be a desirable gadget with a thin body, fast internet connectivity and durable battery,” he said.

Acer’s marketing chief Daniel Rustandi said that the company showed positive sales growth this year to date. “From the first quarter until now, growth has been about 11 to 14 percent,” he said.

Daniel said that competition in the Indonesian market had tightened with the advent of tablet PCs. “Currently, there is a ‘tablet PC fever’. However, a laptop is still preferable for many users in Indonesia,” he said.

Daniel said that the ultrabook, which comes with a 13.3-inch screen and weighs 1.4 kilograms, would be sold for Rp 7 million (US$791).
