NDONESIA: In two separate accidents on a rainy Saturday, two trucks plunged from inner-city toll roads in West Jakarta as the drivers were believed to have been speeding on wet roads. The accidents caused massive traffic congestion.

The first truck fell 15 meters off the flyover near the Jelambar 1 toll gate in West Jakarta at around 2:30 p.m. near the Season City shopping mall.

“The condition of the road was wet due to heavy rain. We believe that the driver was speeding, which caused him to lose control of his vehicle,” West Jakarta Police traffic division chief Adj. Sr. Comr Sularno said.

He said that while the truck was moving at a high speed, the driver saw a truck behind and tried to avoid it by moving to the right.

The driver, however, mismanaged the steering wheel and ended up hitting the toll road separator and then fell off the flyover, he said.

“The driver, Ujang, only suffered minor injuries as the truck fell upon its backside first. There were no cars passing underneath, so there were no casualties,” Sularno said, adding that the driver had been treated at Sumber Waras hospital.

The truck was apparently upside down and the boxes that were inside were spilled out. The accident caused massive traffic congestion on JL. Latumenten as onlookers blocked the traffic to see the incident.

About 50 minutes later, the second truck fell 6 meters off the flyover near the S. Parman intersection, also in West Jakarta.

Sularno said that the truck, which came from Semanggi in South Jakarta heading to Grogol in West Jakarta, fell after speeding on a slippery road.

Three people, the driver and two passengers, were injured in the accident that occurred at around 4 p.m. They were rushed to the Pelni Petamburan Hospital for further treatment.

“The driver, Lamin, suffered a minor injury and went to the hospital by ojek [motorcycle taxi], while another was more seriously injured,” Sularno said.

The truck was immediately evacuated as the accident also caused a long traffic jam.
