akarta: Prosecutors have demanded that suspended Central Jakarta judge Syarifuddin be sentenced to 20 years in jail for allegedly taking a Rp 250 million bribe while handling a case.

Prosecutors told the Jakarta Corruption Court on Thursday that Syarifuddin accepted the bribe from Puguh Wirawan, a trustee of garment maker PT Skycamping Indonesia (SCI) who had been declared bankrupt.

The bribe was paid to change the status of two plots of land, so SCI could sell them.

“We find no mitigating factors, Your Honors,” prosecutor Zeth Tadung Allo told the court.

Zeth said that Syarifuddin dishonored the judiciary, discredited the KPK and hampered the KPK’s investigation and prosecution.

“The defendant impeded the trial and always hampered the KPK investigation,” Zeth said. “He addressed the KPK as a robber, rejected the KPK witnesses and even accused prosecutors of teaching witnesses to lie.”

Prosecutors said that Syarifuddin tarnished the judiciary.

Zeth said that the alleged crime was very serious.

“He is convincingly guilty,” he said, adding that the prosecutors also requested Syarifuddin be ordered to pay Rp 500 million in fines or serve an additional six months in jail.

KPK investigators arrested Syarifuddin at his home in Sunter, North Jakarta, on June 1 last year, shortly after he allegedly received the money.
