T

he City Police on Friday named three suspects in the attack on six mourners at the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital’s funeral home in the early hours of Thursday.

“The suspects were S, S, and E. They were arrested at a car workshop in West Jakarta,” Central Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Angesta Romano Yoyol told reporters.

According to Angesta, police found out during questioning that the attack was incited by a drug deal gone wrong. “Around Rp 320 million (US$35,520) was allegedly at stake in the deal,” he said.

All three have been charged under Article 170 of the Criminal Code for a forceful attack with the intent to inflict harm and are now in custody at the Central Jakarta Police headquarters.

“In the case development, if the evidence is strong enough, we can also apply murder charges on the suspects,” City Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said.

The police also confiscated a Toyota Kijang minivan as evidence during the arrest. The car had allegedly been used by the suspects to go to the hospital prior to the attack.

Separately, the Jakarta Police’s general crimes directorate chief Sr. Comr. Toni Harmanto told reporters that the police believed E was the mastermind of the attack.

“E was seen at the hospital with the attackers and he was left unscathed afterwards. This is why we think that he is actually the mastermind,” Toni said.

Previously, E told The Jakarta Post that he had nothing to do with the violent incident.

Two people died and four were left severely injured following an attack by dozens of people at the funeral home at around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday.

The police investigation discovered that the six victims were coming to the hospital to pay their final respects to a colleague who had recently passed away.

The casualties were immediately brought to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital (RSCM) for autopsies. They were identified as 39-year-old Stendley Wenno from Senen, Central Jakarta, and 37-year-old Ricky Tutuboy from Papua.

Meanwhile, the injured four were currently being treated at a hospital in Central Jakarta.

Central Jakarta Police crime detective chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Hengky Haryadi told reporters that the police had taken 15 into custody in relation to the attack. The police would conduct urine tests on all 15 in custody to see if they had illegal substances in their system.
