AKARTA: Tambora, West Jakarta, held its first Car-Free Day on Sunday to support Jakarta’s pollution reduction-program.
The event, held from 6 to 8 a.m., was the first ever conducted at district level.
“Car-restriction zones are usually organized by the municipal administration. Now, it’s on trial at the district level,” Tambora district deputy head Ali Maulana Hakim said.
“We invited the public to join the fun bike [event] we organized to ensure the success of the first project,” he added as quoted by tempo.co.
Ali said that Tambora was designated to host the pilot project because of its heavy traffic.
The car-restriction zone included Jl. Latumenten, Jembatan Lima, Bandengan and a part of Kota, Jakarta’s old city. In the near future, other districts in West Jakarta would simultaneously hold the same program, Ali said.
