SBY asks KPK to turn attention to Education and Culture Ministry

P

residential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said on Tuesday that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had called on the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to investigate alleged corruption involving Education and Culture Deputy Minister for Culture Wiendu Nuryanti.

'€œThe alleged wrongdoing [at the ministry] has been handed over to law enforcers, which in this case is the KPK. The President suggested it was the body with the authority to handle the matter,'€ Julian said at the State Palace.

Yudhoyono summoned Education and Culture Minister M. Nuh on Monday.

Nuh refused comment when asked about the alleged involvement of his deputy in a corruption case.

'€œEverything is being handled by the KPK and I have just given a verbal report to the President. Let'€™s just wait for the KPK to deal with the matter,'€ he said.

According to the minister, Wiendu has also given written clarification, a copy of which has been given to Yudhoyono.

'€œIf guilty, anyone must take responsibility,'€ Nuh said.

Previously, Nuh submitted an investigative report arranged by the ministry'€™s inspectorate general to the KPK. The report revealed alleged irregularities in the 2012 budget for the ministry'€™s culture directorate general.

The ministry'€™s inspector general, Haryono Umar, said several irregularities had been found in units led by Wiendu, including budget markups totaling Rp 700 billion (US$71.2 million) in the culture directorate general. (ebf)
