The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) destroyed at least 10 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, locally known as shabu-shabu, and 9,000 ecstasy pills on Thursday.

It was the 20th time this year that the agency had destroyed drugs, conducted at BNN headquarters in Jakarta.

On June 13, BNN foiled an attempt to smuggle 5.1 kilograms of crystal meth and 9,107 ecstasy pills into Indonesia from Malaysia via Entikong, West Kalimantan.

The smuggling attempt was discovered when BNN officials arrested a man with 5.1 kilograms of shabu-shabu and 9,107 ecstasy pills in Balai Karangan on the border between West Kalimantan, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

'The suspect bought RM 770,000 or Rp 2.3 billion (US$211,600) worth in Malaysia and planned to distribute them in Indonesia,' said BNN chief Anang Iskandar.

An official from the Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Agency in Pontianak, was arrested on July 15 for allegedly abetting the crime.

'We are also pursuing another suspect with the initials AC who allegedly sponsored the crime,' said Anang.

On July 25, BNN and the Customs and Excise office at Soekarno-Hatta Airport foiled an attempt to smuggle in 5,018 grams shabu-shabu from India and arrested an Indian citizen and an Indonesian.

If proven guilty, the suspects could face the death penalty or life in prison. (hrl/ebf)
