ecently more Indonesians have become aware of the importance of protecting their ideas with intellectual property rights (IPR), a senior official said on Wednesday.
The Directorate General of Intellectual Property Rights at the Law and Human Rights Ministry recorded that there had been between 180,000 and 190,000 IPR registrations every year.
Razilu, the directorate general's secretary, said that trademark registration became the most improved category with registration soaring from 20,660 in 2003 to 62,813 in 2013.
The government, through a number of regulations, currently covered seven intellectual property right categories: copyright, patent, industrial design, trademark, integrated circuit, trade secretS and geographical indications.
Razilu said that with the increase in registration, his office had contributed Rp 267 billion (US$22.08 million) to the state coffers.
Unfortunately, the rising number was not supported by an increased effort in piracy eradication. Global Software Piracy Study from Business Software Alliance (BSA) recorded that software piracy in Indonesia had seen an 86 percent hike in 2012. (idb)
