oordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security Affairs Tedjo Edhy says he has yet to receive any reports from the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) or the National Police about a specific terrorist threat in the country, but nevertheless the people and security authorities should maintain their vigilance.

'€œThere are no reports from BIN, the police have also made no reports. But this does not mean that there are no terrorist threats and we have to remain on alert and I have asked BIN, the police and the TNI [Indonesian Military] to be more vigilant,'€ he said.

Tedjo was responding, prior to a Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday, to travel warnings issued by the Australian Foreign Ministry and the United States that terrorists were preparing attacks in the country.

The Australian government has warned its citizens in Indonesia on the basis of intelligence information on potential terror attacks in the country. The US previously released a travel warning for its citizens staying in East Java about potential terrorist attacks in the province.

Tedjo said the travel warnings released by US and Australia did not indicate impending terrorist attacks in the country.

'€œThe two governments have warned their citizens to stay alert but this does not mean that the country is under threat because terrorists will launch attacks. We have also asked our citizens to remain alert and this is normal because we are obliged to stay alert,'€ he said.

BIN Chief Marciano Norman said after following up on the information provided by the Australian government, that there were no indications that terrorists were planning attacks in the country.

'€œWe have also taken preventive actions but all information, no matter how minor, will be followed up. But there are no strong indications supporting their information. The solution is that we convince all sides that security is under control and that the two governments eventually withdraw the travel warnings,'€ he said as quoted by kompas.com.

He acknowledged that despite the secure conditions, potential terrorist threats could emerge at any time and in any place in the country and therefore the government had asked everyone to play an active role in preventing terrorist attacks

He added that the situation in Surabaya was fine although security authorities in East Java had taken responsive measures to maintain security and public order in the province.(+++)
