Bank Indonesia (BI) said it will promote the electronic system of payment or e-money transactions in 2015.

'€œIn 2014, there was already a rising trend of e-money transactions, but the use of paper money is still dominant. Therefore, more aggressive education is needed this year,'€ the head of the West Java branch of BI, Rosmaya Hadi, said on Tuesday as quoted by Antara news agency.

Non-cash transactions are gradually increasing in West Java, Rosmaya said.

Demand for cash was still high in West Java During the Christmas and New Year holidays as the central bank branch of West Java had to provide Rp 9.4 trillion (US$ 742.6 million) in paper currency, she said.

'€œTo promote the use of e-money, BI teamed up with higher education institutions in West Java such as Unpad, IPDN and Ikopin Bandung, as well as social organizations,'€ she added.

Meanwhile, Bank Mandiri'€™s head of e-banking, Rahmat B Triaji, said payments with e-money grew, as evidenced by rising e-payments of toll road fees. '€œThe e-payment toll system serves as an effective education in the use of e-money. We set the target of 1 million transactions a month,'€ Rahmat said. (***)
