Six out of 10 mining companies operating in Tomohon City, North Sulawesi, are conducing business without the proper mining permits.
City councilor Harun Lululangi said that without the permits, the companies were not obliged to pay taxes.
'Each company is exploiting between 10 and 20 hectares of land on average. They should pay between Rp 50 million [US$3,930] and 100 million in taxes each year,' Harun said.
Most of the companies are working on plots of land in Kakaskasen and Kinilow subdistrict in North Tomohon district. Some companies own the land, while others rent from local residents. (***)
