political analyst from the University of Indonesia (UI), Boni Hargens, said the naming of National Police chief candidate Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan as a graft suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Tuesday was a blessing in disguise for President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo.
He said that Budi's naming as a graft suspect showed that Jokowi was still surrounded by 'political bandits' striving to obstruct the Jokowi administration.
'Budi Gunawan is a figure that was offered to Jokowi by the bandits surrounding him. [...] Jokowi must be brave enough to say 'no' to powerful people with bad ideas,' Boni said in a statement obtained by The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
Boni praised commitments by both the KPK and the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK)to support Jokowi's "mental revolution" goals. Both institutions had demonstrated a commitment to clean government and democracy, he added.
'We can only hope that Jokowi continues to cooperate with these institutions to banish political bandits in other sectors, such as the economy and law,' said Boni.
Budi was named a graft suspect on Tuesday over his suspiciously fat bank accounts. Allegedly, he engaged in graft and bribery during his time in the National Police's career development unit. (dyl/ebf)(++++)
