P

lease allow us, volunteers who have so far supported President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's Mental Revolution movement for a better Indonesia, to express the resolve of our consciences in connection with the approval of his sole choice of candidate, Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan, for chief of the National Police by the House of Representatives.

We're getting restless because the candadicy of Budi Gunawan to become National Police chief had been decided without taking into consideration his status of having been named as a graft suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

Therefore, we ask you, Mr. President, as the holder of the people's mandate, to annul or revoke the candidacy of the Comr. General for the National Police chief's position.

We're aware the appointment of the National Police chief is within your prerogative as the President. However, we also hope that the figure of the National Police chief should be one who has integrity and a good track record.

We need to remind you that our support does not constitute a kind of blank cheque. We supported and elected you because we trusted you to fulfil your promises to enchance law enforcement and fight against corruption in Indonesia that you made during your election campaign.

As the KPK has named Budi Gunawan a graft suspect, we urge you, Mr. President, to respect its decision as a way to fulfill your election promise to never appoint state officials who have legal problems.

If you do not revoke his candidacy to become National Police chief, through this letter we as volunteers of Konser Salam 2 Jari will take to the streets and ask the KPK to settle the criminal case behind the suspicious bank accounts owned by high-ranking police officers.

We believe, Mr. Jokowi, as the President we elected you to hear with your heart and not merely with your ears.

We're restless because we have not been able to convince you to retract the candidacy of Budi Gunawan. But we believe you still have the heart to listen to our voices. (hhr)
