akarta Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat says that all minimarkets operating 24 hours a day in Jakarta are unauthorized, as a 2002 bylaw states that minimarkets are only allowed to operate until 10 p.m.
In order to open for 24 hours, minimarkets must apply for a permit from the governor to do so, but Djarot stated that no minimarket owner had done so.
Djarot also requested that minimarkets which falsified their operating permits be sent warning letters.
A review of the bylaw by the Jakarta Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Agency has also been called for by Djarot.
'I am calling for the bylaw's reevaluation because abiding by the current bylaw's conditions means that all minimarkets are violating it,' Djarot said on Friday as quoted by kontan.co.id.
In the planned review, a regulation regarding the amount of minimarkets would also be enforced in certain areas of the city, which would be determined by the size and population of the area.
'Don't let minimarkets encroach into small neighborhoods. Small traders will definitely lose competitiveness,' he said. (dyl/nfo)(+++)
