n response to President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's choice of Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan as candidate for chief of the National Police, a coalition of Indonesian students in Australia has urged Jokowi to stay true to his general election pledge to fully support the fight against corruption in Indonesia.
The candidacy of Budi Gunawan to become National Police chief was decided by Jokowi without taking into consideration the naming of Budi as a suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), the coalition said in a statement on Friday.
The student group demanded that the President revoke the candidacy of Budi and proposed another candidate with integrity to lead the institution.
The President is responsible for guaranteeing that the program to eradicate corruption runs optimally, including within the police institution, by insisting on utmost integrity and clean records among all cadres.
The coalition also urged the President to oppose any oligarchic interests that try to hijack the agenda of clean government. (hhr)(+++)
