he Jakarta Police refused to acknowledge a recent report released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) that says Jakarta is one of least safe cities among 50 cities surveyed in five countries.
'I do not know how they got that conclusion, but as far as I know, Jakarta is a safe city,' Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Martinus Sitompul told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
Jakarta sits at the bottom of the list of 50 cities in the overall Safe Cities Index 2015 report released on Monday.
The EIU launched the index by assessing urban safety and security in four categories: digital security, health security, infrastructure safety and personal safety. Jakarta ranked 45th in the personal safety category.
According to Martinus, the Jakarta Police strove to provide a secure environment for Jakarta citizens and emphasized that the police's crimes-solved data offered solid proof.
In its year-end report, the Jakarta Police claimed 2014 was a safer period for Jakartans compared to the previous year, with just 48,503 crimes reported compared to the 51,444 reported in the previous year. (***)
