T

he search and rescue (SAR) team for AirAsia flight QZ8501 found the cockpit of the ill-fated Airbus A320-200 in the Karimata Straits off Pangkalan Bun of Central Kalimantan on Saturday.

The team recovered one body from the cockpit that is suspected to be one of the pilots.

'€œWe suspect that it was the pilot'€™s body because it was in the pilot'€™s seat and had a uniform on,'€ the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) chief Air Marshal FH Bambang Soelistyo said on Saturday as quoted by kompas.com.

Bambang could not confirm whether the body belonged to Capt. Iriyanto or the French co-pilot Remy Plesel because the body had already decomposed significantly.

'€œWe have to wait for the forensic examination by the [National Police]'€™s Disaster Victim Identification team,'€ he said.

He also hoped that the weather would be clear and the sea current would not be strong throughout Saturday so that the SAR team could recover the body of the second pilot.

The AirAsia Indonesia plane crashed on the morning of Dec. 28, 2014, en route to Singapore from Surabaya, East Java, killing 162 people on board including one infant. (nfo)
