he disaster victim identification (DVI) team from the East Java Police has identified the remains of a nine-year-old passenger from AirAsia flight QZ8501, which crashed into the Java sea on Dec. 28, 2014.
Leader of the DVI team Sr. Com. Budiyono said on Friday that the body parts had been identified as belonging to Ingrid Jessica Winata, a girl from Surabaya, East Java.
'We were able to identify parts of the body after matching the DNA with the genetic evidence collected from the comb used by the victim taken by the team from her home,' he added.
With the identification of Jessica's remains, so far the DVI team has identified 69 victims of the crash.
The team is now working to identify the remains of 24 other passengers from the flight.
This week, the team also received the remains of 13 individuals believed to be AirAsia passengers.
'We have also received remains from Majene, West Sulawesi, in the form of body parts such as legs similar to the ones we received from Makassar, South Sulawesi,' he said.
