A

police officer on duty near the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta has denied allegations of officers taking illegal levies from public buses.

First Brig. Muhammad Robby, an officer from the Jakarta Police'€™s traffic unit who is posted at the U-turn, said he would allow public buses to make illegal U-turns in order to avoid congestion at the traffic circle.

'€œIf there is congestion here, I will allow the bus to make a U-turn, so [the congestion] doesn'€™t get worse,'€ Robby said Friday, as quoted by kompas.com.

An illegal levy video went viral on Thursday. The two-minute video, uploaded by Ray Hendriks to YouTube, shows Kopaja bus conductors appearing to place cash at a police post at Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta. The buses then make illegal U-turns.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Martinus Sitompul apologized for the video on Thursday, saying that the police would investigate the officers shown in the video and the public buses that gave cash.
